Me & Elvis & Jesus (3:52)
During my working life (thankfully I’m now retired from that nonsense) I spent a lot of time on the road sleeping in hotels, motels and other sleeping establishments. None of these were on the high end of the scale so I got used to some pretty mundane wall art – velvet Elvis’s and miniature religious statuettes among them. Sometimes, because these stays could last for weeks or months depending on the length of the project I was working on, it felt like I had been banished from home. It never was the case, but the circumstances did inspire me to come up with a song that featured said velvet Elvis and religious statuary – that and the Statler Brothers song “Flowers on the Wall”.
It took a while to get all of the references right, but in the end I think the song provides a really good balance of the dramatic and the humorous. The judges at the 2019 Great American Song Contest felt it was good enough to be a finalist in the country category. I hope it brings at least a bit of a smile to your face.
