When Pete last visited Woody in the hospital, Guthrie had lost the power of speech but had two cardboard signs -- one said "Yes," the other said "No." When Woody's wife asked if he recognized Pete, Woody slapped the piece of cardboard that said "Yes." Woody died a few months later.
