Ogden Heart
“Backwoods Sound”

Isabel and Evans Humphreys honed their musical chops at their mother’s knee. When mom is longtime Charlottesville singer/songwriter Kathryn Caine, it makes sense to get the family band together and put out a record. As one hears on “Backwoods Sound,” Isabel and Evans, now students at North Carolina State University, aren’t just coasting on mom’s coattails. Isabel’s voice is mature beyond her years and Evans anchors the low end with his bass play. Reminiscent of classic Alison Krauss, this song is the perfect introduction to Ogden Heart, built on a driving bluegrass rhythm coupled with stellar harmonies that only a familial bond can create. – D.S.

Overall Impression: "Backwoods Sound" is a gorgeous new release from the North Carolina family bluegrass band Ogden Heart. Siblings Isabel and Evans Humphreys on lead vocals and upright bass respectively are joined by their mother, accomplished singer/songwriter Kathryn Caine on this track, along with several of the region's finest pickers. Isabel paints a stirring portrait of pastoral Southern living on "Backwoods Sound", employing brilliant illustrative prose to illuminate the absolute purity and artistic merit of what was once simply referred to as "hillbilly music." Banjo, mandolin and pedal steel add scintillating color to a rock-solid rhythm section here, providing Humphreys' with the ideal backdrop for her naturally crystalline voice as she gives a truly stunning performance, imbuing listeners with her high and lonesome spirit. Ogden Heart's "Backwoods Sound" is a must-hear for any bluegrass enthusiasts, whether they be traditionalists or fans of newgrass, thanks to the superb authentic musicianship and progressive approach to production that shine through on this song.

Strongest Point(s): Outstanding production and an excellent mix. Great tonal balance and clarity. Love the intro and outro, the filter effect used there really does well to enhance the track and give it a modern sheen. Stellar playing by the entire ensemble, all in the service and support of the singer and the song; never overpowering or outshining Isabel's vocal, which is absolutely breathtaking in itself. Clever songwriting, very vivid imagery and wonderful usage of metaphors and similes; "Mona Lisa on a dirt road" is particularly striking. Overall, it's a beautiful tune and an incredibly polished track that should have no trouble finding an audience, and should really resonate within the bluegrass community thanks to its clear reverence and admiration of the genre. Fantastic work on this song, by everyone involved!

Introducing Ogden Heart, new family band from Virginia
Posted on October 25, 2022 By John Lawless

Long time readers will recall us writing about Charlottesville, VA bluegrass singer and songwriter Kathryn Caine, who has released a number of recordings over the past decade.

Just recently we heard from Kathryn about her new group, Ogden Heart, made up of herself and her two young adult children, Izzy on vocals, and Evans on bass. Caine plays guitar and harmonizes with them in a style that lands somewhere between bluegrass and Americana, with some old time influence in the mix.

Their debut, self-titled album has been completed, and Kathryn has shared some of the music to help introduce Ogden Heart to bluegrass lovers. This first is the music video for their version of the Tom Paxton classic, Last Thing on My Mind. The family is supported by John Lee on banjo, Rusty Seidel on guitar, Andy Thacker on mandolin, and James McLaughlin on drums.

Check it out…

The Ogden Heart album is available for pre-order now on Bandcamp, with includes immediate downloads of the first two tracks.

Nicely done.

Radio programmers will find the tracks at AirPlay Direct.

Ogden Heart is a family band consisting on mother Katherine Caine, son Evans Humphreys and daughter Isabel Humphreys. Formerly know as The Family Band, Ogden Heart delivers an eclectic blend of traditional songs with original arrangements to present their self titled album Ogden Heart.
Caine is a seasoned musician, starting her career with the country punk band in South Carolina. Twelve albums and a family later, Ogden Heart is in some ways is her magnum opus, a ladder out of a well of grief that resonates with roots in southern regional culture and musical progression. A Virginia native, Katherine Caine raised her kids in southeastern NC where the rural, agricultural area inspired many of her songs, Whiteville and Tobacco and Dust , two of her most noted. Caine trained her kids to sing and play and raised them in an extremely artistic household where literature, music, sports and philosophy were embraced.
Evans Humphreys on bass is exceptional and his smooth harmonising brings to mind Crosby Stills and Nash. Isabel Humphreys’ voice is haunting and sublime and coupled with her poetic lyrics, are reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Alison Krauss.
Ogden HeartThis is not your typical family bluegrass band. Isabel and Evans were exposed to all types music growing up and blend that exposure in the music they perform. Evans plays in several blues and funk bands at NC State, his biggest influence being the great Victor Wooten, and Isabel is a flute player who has been heavily involved in both classical music and musical theater. She is at home singing both bluegrass and Andrew Lloyd Weber I dont know How to love him from Jesus Christ Superstar sung by Isabel of The Family Band.
Isobel is also a budding songwriter and captures the magic of the music of her youth in Backwoods Sound that Katherine put to music and James McLaughlin of Mountainside Studio engineered. The most profound line of the song is the hook Mona Lisa on a dirt road that compares bluegrass to Da Vinci’s famous Mona Lisa. Other songs include Silver Dagger – a Kathryn Caine original, The Whiskey Song that echoes the style of J.J.Cale, Bill Monroe’s The One I Love Is Gone, Soldier of the Cross written by Lorin Rowan, Tom Paxton’s The Last Thing on My Mind and the Mike Nesmith’s Nine Times Blue, an absolute radio ready standout Then there is the gospel tinged Crossing by Roger Miller, Border Song by Elton John and the original song by Kathryn Caine The Bye and Bye that serves as a benediction to the album.

The lineup of musicians on the full length release are top notch gold. Rusty Speidel (Speidel, Goodrich and Goggins) on guitar,, Andy Thacker (Love Canon, Kathryn Caine) on mandolin, Sam Wilson (Sons of Bill, Mary Chapin Carpenter) on pedal steel, Kathryn Caine (Down Home Girl, Whiteville, When I Was His Wife) on acoustic guitar and piano, John Lee on banjo, Evans Humphreys on bass and vocals, James McLaughlin on drums, and Isabel Humphreys on vocals.
This album Ogden Heart captures the beauty, magic, and mystery of the rural South and Americana bluegrass music with poetic songs, brilliant guitar and mandolin licks, haunting and driving banjo, swelling steel, tight harmonies with a great rhythm section. The vocal talents of Isabel, Kathryn Caine and Evans. Ogden Heart was recorded, mixed and engineered by James McLaughlin at Mountainside Studio in Charlottesville, Va. It was produced by Kathryn Caine and James McLaughlin.

Southern writer Eudora Welty said, “A good snapshot stops a moment from running away.” Ogden Heart, the debut album from Ogden Heart (formerly The Family Band), does Welty proud. An eclectic compilation of traditional songs refashioned with unique arrangements, this album anchors the listener to a sense of place with lyrics about family, region, rebirth and hope. A mix of southern bluegrass and Americana, Ogden Heart echoes the heritage and traditions of the South that anchor in times of change. Joy, loss, love and reconciliation accent the songs recorded by Kathryn Caine and her children, Evans and Isabel Humphreys who recorded with James McLaughlin at Mountainside Studio in Charlottesville, VA. Listeners will hear the creativity that emerged from a period of profound grief: Caine explains: “When my dad died it intersected with my kids sojourn to college, and the need to capture songs that meant the most to us as a family, plus a few we wrote, led me back into the studio. Capturing a snapshot of what mattered in a tidal wave of change motivated me to preserve music that shaped me. The urgency to hold on to what was passing by so quickly led to many hours of arranging and reflecting on the lyrics and music passed down from my dad to me and then my kids. This album is a thread connecting generations of musicians with songs that tell a story we love.”

Caine is a seasoned musician, starting her career with the country punk band, The Waywards in Charleston, SC, who were a staple at the Music Farm when it was in it’s infancy. 12 albums and two adult kids later, Ogden Heart is in some ways is her magnum opus, a ladder out of a well of grief that resonates with roots in southern regional culture and musical progression. A Virginia native, Caine raised her kids in southeastern NC where the rural, agricultural area inspired many of her songs, Whiteville and Tobacco and Dust , two of her most noted. She is also a budding songwriter and captures the magic of the music of her youth in Backwoods Sound that Caine put to music and James McLaughlin of Mountainside Studio engineered and arranged and brought to life. The most profound line of the song is the hook “Mona Lisa on a dirt road” that compares bluegrass to Da Vinci’s famous Mona Lisa. Other songs include Silver Dagger- a Kathryn Caine original, The Whiskey Song that echoes the style of J.J.Cale, Bill Monroe's The One I Love Is Gone, Soldier of the Cross written by Lorin Rowan, Tom Paxton's The Last Thing on My Mind The Last Thing On My Mind written by Tom Paxton (cover by Ogden Heart) and the great Mike Nesmith's Nine Times Blue, an absolute radio ready standout! Check out the YouTube video at Nine Times Blue By Mike Nesmith (cover by The Family Band)! There is also the gospel tinged Crossing by Roger Miller, Border Song by Elton John and the original song by Kathryn Caine The Bye and Bye that serves as a benediction to the album.

The lineup of musicians on the full length release are top notch gold. Rusty Speidel (Speidel, Goodrich and Goggins) on guitar,, Andy Thacker (Love Canon, Kathryn Caine) on mandolin, Sam Wilson (Sons of Bill, Mary Chapin Carpenter) on Pedal Steel, Kathryn Caine (Down Home Girl, Whiteville, When I Was His Wife) on acoustic and piano, John Lee on banjo, Evans Humphreys on bass and vocals, James McLaughlin on drums, and Isabel Humphreys on vocals.
