A twist on the traditional folk song theme of a young girl being slain by a gambler, traveler, or scoundrel, "Jean and the River" was written about a particular location along the Green River in Kentucky, near the historic entrance to Mammoth Cave. The water in that area of the river has several spots known as "blue holes" that are extremely deep because of the karst terrain, thus the reference to "where the deepest water flows".

Guitar buffs may be interested to know that all electric lead guitar parts on this song were played by Greg Martin of the Kentucky Headhunters-- on his 1958 Gibson Les Paul nicknamed "Hank." The acoustic guitar parts were recorded by Dan Modlin on a 1961 Gibson J-50 and a Martin 0000-15M.
