If little Charlie Wenjack hadn't died in horrific circumstances, this January 19th (2023) would have been his 70th birthday. For those that don't know,  Charlie (his real name was Chanie - but the residential school renamed him Charlie, from his heritage-given name), posthumously became a catalyst in reforming and finally abolishing the residential school system.<br />

Twelve-year-old Charlie ran away from his school and died of hunger and exposure at Farlane, Ontario, while trying to walk 600 km (370 mi) back to his home, Ogoki Post on the Marten Falls Reserve. His ordeal and his death brought attention to the treatment of children in the Canadian Indian residential school system and following Wenjack's death, an inquest into the matter was ordered by the Government of Canada.
