That's A Life
Got a call last night from an old friend I hadn’t talked to in nine or ten
Years or so, man, we didn’t know just where that time had gone.
Said he was livin’ it up down in Malibu, riding market bulls and real estate booms
Had a house on a hill with an oceanfront view of the yacht he just bought

We finished up talking all about his month in Rome
My wife came in as I was hanging up the phone
I guess she must seen me lower my eyes
When I said “Man, what a life.” And she said…

You’re a lucky man, that’s what you are
You’ve got more to show than fancy cars
Like the ring here on my finger
That’s stayed on through thick and thin
A daughter that thinks you hung the moon
And a son that runs straight to you every night
When it’s time to tuck ‘em in tight…now that’s a life

She said “It’s so easy to beat ourselves up over what we don’t have and all those could’ve-dones
But life ain’t about gettin’ what you want, no, it’s wantin’ what you got”
Like that diploma hanging there on the wall
Right next to the medals you earned when your country called
There’s that proud smile on your old man’s face
Yeah, those are things that no one ain’t gonna ever take away”

You’re a lucky man, you’ve got all you need
You’ve see things some never see
Like the sun setting on a stretch of land
That you can call all your own
Your word’s as strong as the hand you shake
There ain’t a friend you got that wouldn’t lay
It all on the line for you and even think twice…now, that’s a life

Tears came to my eyes as she laid her head on my chest
And said believe me, baby ‘cuz I know all about being blessed…and I said

I’m a lucky man, I know I am
I built this house with my own hands
Where I’ll watch my kids grow up
And give my wife a man to love
Where I thank God every night
That I wake up with a smile
That I laugh, I love, that I cry…now, that’s a life
