Pecosita - By Mandy Rowden and Marsha Padilla (BMI)

Tall and slender, white hair behind his ears
Mostly I remember the absence of his fears
Nice to meet you, please call me James
I never cared for my surname

He always claimed Clark Gable as a cousin
He’d never met him and I suspect he wasn’t
But as he talked for hours about his younger years
I could picture strong shoulders and thick black hair behind is ears, and he said

CHORUS:
Pecosita, please don’t cry
Love is immortal
Love, it never dies
Hopeless in his veins
Wisdom in his eyes
Oh Pecosita, please don’t cry

Drop by drop through each brittle vein
Like sand through an hourglass, his time in each small grain
Years went by we waited and prayed but he wasn’t getting better
His wife could never stay, I think her heart wouldn’t let her
And I can still see the chair under the window by the bed
Where I’d sit for hours while he stirred his coffee and I read
Until finally the day came, I apologized for my tears
Wordlessly he saluted me, I think he knew the end was near, and he said

CHORUS

The gifts he gave to me, the things he left behind
Have all been set free, just like this man so kind
This brave and humble being, he was never meant to stay here
Now I see him standing tall tucking his hair behind his ears, and he says

CHORUS
