You Are Home
1. My Jewish ancestors owned a bakery in a tiny Russian village
One day an angry mob burned it down
They had very little time
Left everything behind
And sailed away where freedom could be found

2. When he arrived here, my grandpa applied for a job
With a worried face, he waited in line
The boss said with a sneer, “You’re not welcome here.
We don’t hire people of your kind.”

“Go back home!” (2x)
They screamed at my ancestors:
“Go back home!”

3. Immigrants came from Italy, Ireland, Poland too
The bigots said, “Those people don’t belong.
They drink and they fight, they don’t worship right
Send ‘em back if you wanna
keep America strong.”

“Go back home!” (2x)
They screamed at those immigrants
“Go back home!”

Oh, America, God shed His grace on thee
Will we live up to the promise of brotherhood from sea to shining sea?

4. Just like my grandpa, people still come
Searching for a better way
Yearning to be free
Just like me
I pray we can all learn to say:

You are home (2x)
No matter where you come from
You are home
Do I have what it takes
To learn from my mistakes
And tell all of my neighbors:
“you are home”

You are home (2x)
No matter what you look like
You are home...
