9. Carlton County Breakdown / Miller’s Reel / Trip to Windsor
Carlton County was composed by fiddler Earl Mitton of New Brunswick (1926-91) and is very widely played on Prince Edward Island. This version is from Leonard McDonald of Emyvale. Miller’s Reel is very widely played throughout North America and is closely related to the Irish reel, “The Dawn.” Trip to Windsor was written by renowned Cape Breton fiddler and composer Dan R. MacDonald. (Windsor, Ontario – right across the border from Detroit and home to a thriving automobile industry – had a substantial population of Cape Breton emigrées; fiddlers were often brought down from the home Island to play for dances and concerts). Well-known bluegrass fiddler Joe Greene once recorded a suspiciously similar tune under the title, “Road to Jenkins.” (Key: A throughout)
