5. Bonniest Lass in A’ the World / Emil Gaudet’s Reel / Chetticamp Reel
Bonniest Lass shows up in Scottish tune books as early as 1800; I learned it from Sterling Baker of Montague, Prince Edward Island. I got Emil Gaudet’s from David Gaudet (pronounced: “Goody”) of Peter Road. Gaudet learned it from his uncle Emil; the tune may be related to the American folk song, “Little Stream of Whiskey.” David played the tune in D, but I switched it to G to make it fit better in banjo range. Cheticamp Reel is named for a town in Cape Breton known as a center of Acadian culture; it may well have originally been a polka melody.(Key: G throughout)
