3. Omar Cheverie’s Jig / Fig for a Kiss / Hector MacDonald’s Jig
Omar Cheverie’s is played on Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton; my source is Omar Cheverie of Souris (first name rhymes with Homer). Fig for a Kiss (AKA: “The Old Dutch Churn”) was recorded by Cape Breton fiddler Winston Scotty Fitzgerald, who refers to it merely as a “Cape North Jig.” Originally an Irish slip jig in 9/8-time, it has been “compressed” to fit a 6/8-time format. I learned Hector MacDonald’s from a home-made tape of fiddler Hector MacDonald of Bangor (c. 1910-82). (Keys: F/ G-modal/ C)
