Therese Martin (1873–1897) was a French nun who entered the convent as a teenager, but contracted Tuberculosis early on. Often bedridden, Therese felt useless. One day while resting in the convent garden, Therese noticed something: the prized roses and lilies were growing among weedy violets, but all of the plants were equally lovely. She compared the garden to humans: some people achieve greatness in life; others play smaller roles. But, everyone has value. Many photographs were taken of Therese in her lifetime. She had a radiant, compassionate smile in spite of her illness. The lyrics of this song were inspired by Therese and her message of acceptance.
