”This is a longtime staple in my live shows. Written by Stephen Vincent Benet the year Vassar Clements was born (1928), this story seems to be about Vassar. It’s a tale of a young fiddler who goes up against all the best in a fiddle contest. The church was the perfect place to record “Whippoorwill;” my banjo and fiddle filled the hall.
