John began playing guitar at the age of 13 after hearing a recording of the Kingston Trio—and he’s been performing ever since. Beginning in folk music, he moved on to bluegrass and then country music, playing with such seminal Northeast bands as the Down City Ramblers, Cross Creek, Texas Hots, The Lost Boys, and has been a touring road musician out of Nashville.
Out of the seven CDs John Cadley has recorded, I Never Knew marks his fourth collection of all original material. John rose to national recognition when Lou Reid’s recording of John’s song, “Time,” reached Number One on the Bluegrass Unlimited charts, where it remained for three months and has been covered by numerous artists. Since then, John’s songs have been recorded by national recording artists Jim Hurst, Missy Raines, Tony Trischka, Dede Wyland, Amy Gallatin, and Richard Kiser. Three of John songs appear on Jim Hurst’s new CD From the Ground Up, and Lou Reid has recorded several of John’s songs in addition to “Time.”
In the 2022 Just Plain Folks Awards, John’s song “The Hard Years” was chosen Best Bluegrass Song from over 2,800 entries worldwide, including submissions by acclaimed songwriters such as Steve Mougin, John Reischman, and Tom T. Hall.
I Never Knew adds thirteen new songs to John’s catalogue, written in a style John describes as “Jackson Browne meets Bill Monroe”—thoughtful lyrical content complimented by the “high lonesome” sound of traditional bluegrass instruments.
I Never Knew is a musical mosaic of deeply personal songs, straight-ahead bluegrass and country tunes, and soft ballads that provide a rich and diverse listening experience. It may be John’s best work yet.
