These Hills
Well, it’s amazing how we change, people come and people go
I used to know a guy who lived a thousand miles from his home
And one who held onto the past, just enough to keep her there
Babies born and babies grow, place a flower in her hair

The dogs sit quiet in the blackest night waitin’ to save us all
The fire’s lit and it’ll keep on burnin’ through the spring, summer and fall
I’ll give you all that I have to give and your mama will do the same
We don’t need much outside these hills and you gotta know their names

These hills will always hold her, it’s like she’s walkin’ right beside
And Doug Fir will be her keeper, her home on this mountain high
And girl you have her in your smile, in your graceful and lovin’ arms
You’ve always been a fighter, no the apple don’t fall far

The dogs sit quiet in the blackest night waitin’ to save us all
The fire’s lit and it’ll keep on burnin’ through the spring, summer and fall
I’ll give you all that I have to give and your mama would do the same
We don’t need much outside these hills and you gotta know their names

When that fire’s all burned out and the dogs are sittin’ with the night
When waking hours are wearin’ thin, end of a day that’s been done right
I’ll be that single northern starlight, an aspen growin’ down the lane
An eagle nestin’ in the tall trees, strawberries wild on the banks

And the dogs sit quiet in the blackest night waitin’ to save us all
The fire’s lit and it’ll keep on burnin’ through the spring, summer and fall
When the leaves green and the paintbrush bleed go dancin’ in the rain
And if someday you leave these hills, just remember their names

Well, it’s amazing how we change, people come and people go
