12 An Outlaw's Song
An Outlaw’s Song
by Jeff Mamett

Just 21 when I went to town
playing Faro with a gambler
whiskey flowed - he had me for a fool
till I caught him dealing from the bottom

Before his big iron ever cleared the leather
I pulled my pistol - shot him down
gun smoke hung heavy as I made my getaway
left that gambler lying as the people gathered round

(Ch) Thunder roars and lightning flashes
Like a 44 gun
When the devil’s hand pulls the trigger
The deed once done can’t be undone

Out in the street I caught my pony
Gave her my spurs and we did ride
Flying headlong into the foothills
They'll never take me back alive

We traced the Gila down to Yuma
80 miles of desert - no place to hide
with hell at my heels - only stars to guide me
we crossed the Colorado to the Spanish side

(Ch) I can’t go back to Maricopa
I’ll never sleep where I was born
I’m gonna miss my blue eyed darlin
Now I’m an outlaw - on the run
(inst.)
(Ch) Thunder roars and lightning flashes
Like a 44 gun
If I rest - I’ll face the dealer
Livin’s just like dying - for an outlaw on the run

(Ch) Thunder roars and lightning flashes
Like a 44 gun
Thunder roars and lightning flashes
Livin’s just like dying - for an outlaw on the run
