Christopher
Christopher

The river is wide, the river is deep
When you play it as it lays, you’re playing for keeps
The river is mean, the river is cold
It never gets younger, it never grows old

I found a little baby down by the river
It looked a little hungry, it looked a little lost
I put it on my back to keep it from shivering
Stepped in the river to carry it across

Halfway over that baby got heavy
My feet started sinking deep in the river sand
By the time I was able to make it to the levee
That baby had changed into a full grown man

The man said, “Son, I’ll call you Christopher
Now that you’re my steward, man , you better know these facts
You’re gonna bear me in your heart, in your words
In your bones as well as on your back…

Because the river is wide, the river is deep
When you play it as it lays, you’re playing for keeps
The river is mean, the river is cold
It never gets younger, it never grows old”

The man said, “Son, I’ll call you Christopher”
