Easier
I wrote a little song to say
I don’t think I know how to write a song
‘Cause I still write bad similes
Like “a bird in hand is like the day is long”

I started a career but all I do is worry I have no career
I get invited to a party but all I’m thinkin’ is,
“What am I doing here?”

When I seem to be most comfortable,
I’m really wishin’ I was still in bed
I’m always so surprised that folks don’t realize
I’m just hangin’ by a thread

Shouldn’t it be easier by now?
Shouldn’t I have this down?
Shouldn’t I be shinin’ through, collectin’ all my royalties
Shouldn’t I be sure that I know how
Shouldn’t I own this town?
Shouldn’t I be able to depend on all my loyalties and friends
Shouldn’t it be easier by now?

When I talk opinions
I jump right off the deep end like a jerk
I’m bad at self-promotion and I sound desperate
When I talk about my work

Ask me what I’m doin’,
All that I can do is tell you what I did
Tried to avoid mistakes my folks made
Yet I think I might be screwin’ up my kid

When I think I’ve found the perfect way
Somehow I still wind up lost in space
In a house without a floor, in a sea without a shore
Tryin’ not to lose the human race

Shouldn’t it be easier by now?
Shouldn’t I have this down?
Shouldn’t I be shinin’ through, collectin’ all my royalties
Shouldn’t I be sure that I know how
Shouldn’t I own this town?
Shouldn’t I be able to depend on all my loyalties and friends
Shouldn’t it be easier by now?
