Under the Mountain

The locals in Jamestown, TN where Denise Reagan grew up refer to the beautiful valleys of Pall Mall and Little Crab, as 'under the mountain.' When the pioneers came into those valleys, they could see the mountains in the distance without being in them. I imagine it was comforting to look to those mountains as a giant shoulder against the storms of life. They rested under the mountain before they journeyed on.
