When I was a little girl, we'd travel the long, straight roads
In the summer the sky met the spidery cornrows
We'd travel miles from place to place
I'd blink my eyes as the wind kissed my face
My Daddy asked if I was alright

Moved from my Heartland home with my love to Tennessee
The hills rolled on like waves all dressed up in green
I'd roll down my window on a country ride
Smell the honeysuckle breeze as we'd take the next rise

Where the road takes me gives me a reason
To practice my faith to take up my freedom

When I'm a bent, old lady with family to spare
