Biography
Country music fans remember Donna Ulisse from her time on Atlantic Records when she released a critically acclaimed traditional country album “Trouble at the Door” with 3 singles and two videos and appeared on national television shows “Hee Haw, “NBC’s Hot Country Nights”, “Nashville Now” and “Crook and Chase”.
Bluegrass fans have been getting to know Donna over the past few years through her own brand of bluegrass often termed “Bluegrass without Borders” which is mostly self-written. Her 2007 CD “When I Look Back” featured ”I’m Calling Heaven Down” which won the Top Bluegrass Song in the 2009 Just Plain Folks Awards. The title track from her 2009 release “Walk This Mountain Down” was in the Bluegrass Unlimited charts for six months and in June 2009 she was the #1 artist on Sirius XM Satellite radio’s Bluegrass Junction and her song “I Lied” was #1 five different times during the same year. As a songwriter, she is enjoying having her songs on other artists’ projects with recent cuts by Claire Lynch, Darin & Brooke Aldridge and The Bankester Family.
In April of 2010 Ulisse released “Holy Waters”, a collection of gospel bluegrass songs she had written over the past several years with the exception of the Carter Stanley classic “Who Will Sing for Me”. While many call the CD gospel, others have described it as spiritual music. Ulisse calls it her own “soul journey”. Her fourth CD “An Easy Climb” will be released in June 2011 and is once again a collection of original tunes. She tours extensively with her band The Poor Mountain Boys consisting of banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar and upright bass as she brings her music and the stories behind her songs to live audiences around the United States. In July of 2011 she will take her live show abroad for the first time as she and her band travel to Russia as the only American act to perform at the Russian bluegrass festivals in Vologda and Yekaterinburg.
