Rebel Ghost
Rebel Ghost
By Damian Muller

V1:
In the woods just east of Richmond, was the Rebel army line
In the fray one dying soul was lost & left behind
dust to dust he lay there, one hundred years alone
‘til in the woods just east of Richmond, my daddy built our home

V2
The twins were in their high chairs, when they were nearly two
They pointed at the window where the light was shining through
“Mama Man” they shouted out, she turned around to see
A soldier dressed in faded grey, as pale as he could be

Chorus
Pray to the captain, I’m ready to go home
How I miss my momma, I’ve been away so long
I’d fly from here tomorrow, I’m weary and so cold
But I’m bound to stay by duty and my honor to uphold.

V3:
Mama opened up the door to see who he might be
But there was not a living soul as far as she could see
She looked for him around yard, but found nobody there
It seemed the man they clearly saw had vanished in thin air

V4:
That night when daddy came home she held him long and tight
She told him of the solder and how it gave her fright.
He nodded once then told her things he hoped to never tell
Of times when he’d been all alone and seen that ghost as well.

Chorus

V5:
Through the years with glancing views, they’d see him in the yard
Or marching up the driveway like a sentry standing guard
but every time he’d disappear in ways they can’t explain
And leave them with an icy fear running through their veins

V6:
The family met on bended knees and for his soul they prayed
And never saw that man again, before they moved away
He may still be wandering and haunt that country home
Waiting for his orders, and standing o’er his bones

Chorus
