444 Chicken Bone Road
When I was in my 20s
I found myself a friend
An though she was much older
No truester friend coul there have been

She was in her 60's
Widowed at 34
She never had any children
So I became like a daughter to her

My Daddy did the bes the could
Mama died when I was born
I was raised by him and 3 brothers
In between their raising corn
But I'd always see ol' Sara
Alone and working in her yard
She seemed like a lonely old woman
Knowing nothing but working hard

But 444 Chicken Bone Road
Became the place that I liked best
'Round the bend, past the cemetary
Where her husband was laid to rest

I could come to laugh, I could come to cry
On her precious love I came to rely
One place I would never outgrow
Was 444 Chicken Bone Road

Sara played an old pump organ
And she sang 'Amazing Grace'
She sang it at my Daddy's funeral
As the tears ran down my face
Sara gave me her silk white dress to wear
On the day that I was wed
She made a patchwork blanket
for my new born baby's bed

Chorus

Was the day of Sara's birthday
A warm October 24th
I had a big bouquet of flowers
As I knocked upon her door
When no one came to answer
I felt my world come to an end
The angels took my Sara
My confidant, my mother, my friend

But 444 Chicken Bone Road
Is still the place that I like best
Just 'round the bend in the cemetery
Is where my Sara is laid to rest
I still come to laugh, I still come to cry
The good Lord took her in the blink of an eye
No truer friend will I know
Than the one I found on Chicken Bone Road
