Stumbling Stone

He who's alive is alone
and as sure as he'll die, let it be known
the surest of stumbling stones
are those we've rolled miles on our own
the best way anywhere's a straight line
eyes fixed forward affords you no time
to fall into snares they'll design

Today I opened my eyes to the sunrise
and told myself "well this one will surely be my last"

I dreamed of a freeway last night
cardboard trees and stale yellow light
but surely the strangest of sights
people in lines ten thousand wide
all with their hands on their eyes

I stood there for awhile and watched them
and I saw myself in every face that passed me by

They were all lonely people, they were never alone
lined up like dinosaurs doomed to be bones
and the first was the last one in fancier clothes
