Trees Fall Everyday

Charlie Sargent, all old and defeated
poured everything he owned into an army sack
a piano, a wardrobe, and a building in a snowglobe
and the rest of fifty years strung across his back

he said

Nobody loves you when you're underwater
no one remembers once you're buried in the ground
trees fall everyday

Charlie's mother told him "don't trust nobody Charlie" so he seldom had a friend and he never took a bride
did love a woman once though she was married to a lamp post
and Charlie knew he'd never be so strong or bright

she said

Nobody speaks of you when you leave the table
no one remembers once you're buried in the ground
trees fall everyday

Poor Charlie, you could've been a preacher
at least preachers have Jesus, and tithes and wine
you never did learn to play that piano
and you only ever saw that building once in your life

The whole world's screaming when you read your fable
if nobody's listening, did we even make a sound?
