I talked to mom today…sure sounds good
She almost always does…knock on wood
She told me Dad was out, playin’ cards with friends
And she was lookin’ through her letters and loose ends
Old letters and loose ends
We talked about the Hollyhocks…hardy beauty at its best
Some people call ‘em weeds…like they don’t pass some kinda test
She always gives them water, just to make it clear
Those wild Hollyhocks are always welcome here
Friends are always welcome here
“I’m makin’ compost now, for tomatoes in the spring”
“Tonight we’ll visit friends…folks who just moved in”
“Last week I saw the doctor, can’t recall her name”
“But she was very nice…and we could use some rain”
“We sure could use some rain”
We talked a while…She made me smile…And I could hear her smiling to
And when the time had come to say “good bye” she said “good to talk to you”…“Look forward”
So, I said I’d call again tomorrow…and have a chat with Dad
See what he’s been reading…what kind of luck he had
Did he take those nice ladies last nickels and dimes?
Or did the ol’ Stud Poker rob him blind
Hell, he don’t mind
Isabel Allende’s book, Julia, he always finds the gold
Stories for a dying daughter…and the mysteries hearts can hold
Loving memories…doubts…dreams of bliss
Days that feel like years and years that pass like this
Years that pass like this
“Did I say I’m makin’ compost now…for tomatoes in the spring?”
“Tonight we’re goin’ somewhere…I think some new folks just moved in”
“Saw a nice young doctor … can’t remember when”
“Hey, I should let you go but please do call again”
“Please do call again?”
We talked a while…She made me smile…And I could hear her smiling to
And when the time had come to say “good bye” she said “good to talk to you”…“Look forward”
So I think about the time we spend…The laughter and the tears
The music and the horse play…and those nagging nighttime fears
They built a road for us…Exits left and right
Said if you’re ever lost just put up for the night
You’ll be alright
Yeah, I talked to Mom today…sure sounds good
She almost always does…Knock on wood
She told me Dad was out, playin’ cards with friends
And she was lookin’ though her letters and loose ends
Old letters and loose ends
We talked a while…She made me smile…And I could hear her smiling to
And when the time had come to say “good bye” she said “good to talk to you“…”Look forward”
Look forward…Look forward…Look forward
