Local man creates dance called 'The Chicken Neck' (WITH VIDEO)
Cat Daddy, raised in Gastonia and York, said the lyrics just came to him one day at work and that “I knew I was going to make a dance out of this.”

He started rapping when he was 12 years old in the hallways of W.C. Friday Junior High School (now middle school) in Dallas. But, up until two years ago, it had always been something he’d done just for fun.

“I had been on my job (as an operator at a Gastonia rendering plant) for 18 years and I asked myself what I wanted to be,” he said. “I’ve always been musically inclined and people had always told me I did this too good not to take it seriously.”

So Cat Daddy, who previously played drums and keyboard with York-based gospel group The Holy Voices, went down to Atlanta to record his first song and began seeking a music deal, landing one recently with Quinn Records out of St. Louis.

One of the things that sets him apart, he said, is that he keeps it positive and doesn’t curse or denigrate women in his music.

“My main goal is to show people you can do this by doing it clean,” he said. “When I see these young kids today growing up, I want to let them know they can be anything they want to be. You don’t have to go out here and sell drugs, do drugs and curse. There’s a right way to do everything.”

Who: Cat Daddy.

Real name: Maurel Nichols. His stage name comes from a nickname given to him by a supervisor at his day job 18 years ago.

Sounds Like: A fun night out at the club mixed with “a smooth blend of old school (a.k.a. the soulful cool) and a half a cup of new school.” “It’s rap, but a lot of inspiring rap,” Nichols said.

Releases: “They Don’t Love You Back,” was released earlier this month through Quinn Records.

See him live: Unless you have an August trip to St. Louis planned, the best chance will be at video shoot and big cookout for his single “The Chicken Neck,” which takes place July 3 at 1112 Ransom St., Gastonia. He’s looking for volunteers to learn his new dance of the same name for the video – call 803-455-7480.
