Biography
launch Flash site calibe.net 2009home listen news gallery bio notepad itinerary guestbook contact links Downloads Imagine the meeting of dancehall/reggae with pop, R&B, funk and jazz, presented with unforced, even laid back intensity, and you begin to get a sense of what Calibe brings to the musical table.

She is the result of an island upbringing in Kingston, Jamaica, saturated with such outside influences as Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder and Anita Baker. In 2002, Calibe became a finalist in Jamaica’s Caribbean Music Expo Star Search. A series of recordings followed with Jamaican and US producers including Kwame Holland, the force behind Lloyd Banks’ hit ‘On Fire’ and Will Smith’s ‘Switch.’

Through an ongoing mentorship with legendary producers Sly and Robbie, she was enlisted to sing vocals for their track on Beenie Man’s Tropical Storm album. Calibe earned a spot accompanying the dancehall superstar on major tours incorporating Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and the United States.

Eventually Calibe began touring with another Caribbean crossover, Kevin Lyttle, who she has opened for in Europe and the US. “I learned a lot from the people I was touring with. By the time I moved from support vocals to opening act, I was already ready and more than willing,” says Calibe.

After recording and releasing two EPs, The First Draft in 2003 and Follow Me in 2005, she left the music business to go on hiatus for a while. “I got tired of some of the music industry politics I had to deal with before. Augie (Lee) actually pulled me back into it again.”

In 2007, Calibe linked up with producer Augie Lee and the MBIG Music label through a mutual associate. Her first single on the new label was called ‘After All,’ recorded on the Rootal riddim and included on the Rootal compilation CD released early 2007. Calibe’s debut album, titled The Pursuit, is scheduled for a 2009 release on the MBIG Music label, with an international tour to follow.

“This album will feature a mixture of songs that are fun, flirty, feisty, soothing and serious at times. The style of it has been referred to as reggae-soul. I’m calling it The Pursuit because I realize I’m still searching and that hopefully, music will lead me where I need to go.”

Calibe is currently on tour with Kymani Marley with dates set in South America and the US west coast through summer 2009.
