Just a Pair of Overalls
Just a Pair of Overalls

Verse 1:
He tips his hat, wipes the sweat, ponders the fence a spell
Hurting just a little bit, he’s beyond the getting well
The face of toil, he's known the soil, first cousin to the plow
He's a happy man with dirty hands, dust and years on his brow

Chorus:
His last request before he rests, lay him simply, if you would
A change to white will be all right, he cleans up pretty good
No suit and tie for the by and by, as he is when Jesus calls
No fancy shroud or colors proud, just a pair of overalls

Verse 2:
It's end of the row and so he knows, its time and the mules are spent
The sparrow's on the harrow now, the old man's climbed the fence
Pastures there are are the Master’s care, still he hopes to till somehow
In humble dreams he's hitched his team to Jesus’ golden plow

Chorus:
His last request before he rests, lay him simply, if you would
A change to white will be all right, he cleans up pretty good
No suit and tie for the by and by, as he is when Jesus calls
No fancy shroud or colors proud, just a pair of overalls

Bridge:
In a little while he'll cross the stile to reach the other side
Gathering friends are at the fence where each one says goodbye
The sparrow gently flies away before the final call
At last he rests, per last request, in new white overalls

Chorus:
His last request before he rests, lay him simply, if you would
A change to white will be all right, he cleans up pretty good
No suit and tie for the by and by, as he is when Jesus calls
No fancy shroud or colors proud, just a pair of overalls
