Biography
Angel Zuniga Martinez (AZM) is an Adult Alternative Pop/Rock Artist, songwriter, photographer, and filmmaker based in San Antonio, Texas with roots also in Nashville and Knoxville, Tennessee. The emotive baritone singer's latest release is an 11 song self-titled sophomore album with Morrissey and Texas blues influences featuring a power-pop version of the Freddy Fender hit, "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights". Angel’s former musical projects have found support from notable producers Mitch Easter (REM, Wilco, Let’s Active) and Don Coffey Jr (SuperDrag).
Recommended if you like The Smiths, The Doors, U2, Michael Jackson, & 80's BRITPop. Sonically diverse from mournful blues and sensual R&B grooves to pretty adult alternative & roots rock. Lyrically straddles between emotional and political.
AZM's melodic, radio-friendly style is supported on the 2016 release by the Lovers consisting of Felipe Garcia (drums), Kyle Smith (bass), Maya Chavez (background vocals), Bene Medina (accordion) and Robert Jericho on lead guitar and music producer duties. Live shows include Peter Bawa on bass guitar and Chevon Carroll on backup vocals and keyboards. Martinez’s solo debut album “The Cage” was released February 2010 at the Bijou Theatre in Tennessee.
Martinez departed a Knoxville based Brit Powerpop outfit, Angel and the Love mongers, of some accomplishment, starting anew. The Lovemongers were set to embark on an East Coast tour after their appearance at the 2007 Bonnaroo Music Festival helped them crack the CMJ top 200 with their 2007 release The Humanist Queen, produced by Easter, the former Let's Active frontman who produced R.E.M. records in the early '80s. Angel, a Texas A&M graduate and fifth generation Tejano from Brownsville, Texas, moved from Tennessee to San Antonio end of 2011 to pursue a communications career. The songwriting and music was rebirthed in San Antonio.
