I was raised in the Baptist Church. When I got into trouble after moving to California, the voice of Mama Lois and Daddy P.L. spoke to my conscience. Turns out the Baptists were absolutely right about no drinking and smoking. I used to make fun of such old-fashioned ideas – but then I noticed a frequent cough and a frequent urgency. And mom always warned be not to be self-righteous: Fight for your rights, but don’t fight for right. What I think is right will change, but basic human rights are timeless. By the way, Jerry Jeff Walker recorded an excellent version of this song. But the best recording of this song was by Gary Stewart – the most under-appreciated hero of Country Music.
