THE ROMAN

As I walk to your manger, I am filled with such dread
I am burning with anger, there is doubt in my head
You’re the Son of God, so the people say
And your life must be taken away

I wear armor to shield me, there’s a knife on my belt
I have killed men in battle, I have killed while I knelt
Shall I cry out loud, and demand accord
Shall I stand as I draw out my sword

I will fall on my knees, I will bow down my head
I will lift up my hands in Your name
I will tremble with fright, like poor shepherds tonight
And I’m torn with your life in my hands

As I gaze on you Christ child, not a sound should you wake
I will strike in an instant, why does my hand now shake?
I’m to keep the peace, and defend the land
I’ve been sent here to kill if I can

I will fall on my knees, I will bow down my head
I will give up my arms in Your name
And I shudder with fright, that my choice has been right
As I lay down my sword in the sand

I will fall on my knees, I will bow down my head
I will rise and rejoice in Your name
And my spirit is light, I’ve been changed by this night
And I feel I can be a good man

Yes…I feel I can be a good man
You are the Son of God!
