Rock Squirrel in a Twisted Juniper
I had to give this one the most old-timey name possible. I wrote this tune as an exploration of a sound I hear a lot in certain fiddle music- a #4 in the context of a dominant 7th chord. I grew up going to the Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance in Trumansburg, NY. I first heard this mysterious tone listening to the Horse Flies. Judy Hyman and Richie Stearns and a lot of old-time players mess around with this sound. It’s related to the blues but different. In the jazz context it might be called Lydian dominant. I’m just calling it what it reminds me of- a Rock Squirrel in a Twisted Juniper.
