Biography
Albert Newberry was born in 1999 to a Russian mother and an American father. He has been studying classical piano for seven years and jazz improvisations for three years. Last summer Albert recorded his first jazz album, From the Sublime to the Ridiculous, collaborating with a drummer Wes Bonneli and a saxophonist Willis Greenstreet. Nine out of the eleven tracks are his original compositions; the last two are his arrangements of the popular Russian and American folk songs. Among his favorite artists/composers are Herbie Hancock, Fats Waller, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, George Gershwin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Albert started composing when he was ten and cannot imagine doing anything else. His piece, “Tritone Blues,” is one of the winners of the 2013 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award.
