Mama Kat
This is a ballad, driven by the beautiful acoustic guitar and pedal steel playing of Larry Campbell. Like a few of this album’s tunes, this one comes off the slush pile of unfinished song ideas that I initially came up with in my 20s or 30s when songs came out of me on a daily basis (for better or worse). So more than 20 years after the initial verses and lyrics were written I finished the song by adding the bridge. This is a love song written at the very precarious moment when you think you’ve met the person you want to spend the rest of your days with. The mysterious “Mama Kat” of the song title is a bit of an inside joke, but the listener can make of it what they will.
