Biography

Equally inspired by Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Nirvana, and Massive Attack, the LA-based project, After The Fall, combines gritty synthetics, cinematic textures, and sultry female vocals to support emotionally vulnerable lyrics. Consisting of singer/songwriter Irene Merring and composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Mike Genato, the pair bonded in 2010 over their love for 90’s grunge and trip hop, and sought to develop a style that hearkens back to that era. What resulted was an album’s worth of deep, haunting, and moody songs about heartbreak, rape, grief, and addiction. In concert, Irene’s vocals and Mike’s electronics are augmented with a drummer and guitarist, resembling more of a traditional rock band lineup.

Born in Queens, NY and a product of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, Irene Merring has always shown great amounts of raw and unique talent and has never been afraid to speak her mind. This edge has earned her several accolades, including a nomination from the Boston Music Awards and a stint as a backup singer for Mariah Carey. Throughout her career, Irene has become known to combine attitude with a powerful voice and a tortured, yet honest songwriting style reminiscent of Kurt Cobain and Robert Smith.

By contrast, Mike Genato came from the small Western-Pennsylvania town of Greensburg, then moved to NYC in 1996. Mike is most known as the producer for the world renowned drum & bass collective, Mathematics. Considered to be pioneers of US drum & bass, Mathematics was one of the first stateside artists to break into the largely UK dominated scene, signing records to esteemed labels such as Hospital, V, and Renegade. In 2005, Mike Genato produced records for indie-soul artist, Peter Hadar, helping to establish the ‘Cool Wierdo’ sound. At the same time, steadily composed and sound designed ad campaigns for major companies such as MTV, Nike, New Balance, Adidas, and Toyota.
