The State I'm In
The State I’m In

I've been on this train six hours
Windows dark, save for city lights
North Carolina came and went in the dark, it's behind me now
No sleep, I'll see Georgia tonight

My whole life in bags and boxes
Clothes and trinkets that I've saved
A copy of The Stranger and Slouching Towards Bethlehem
A couple lucky charms I'll take to my grave

Chorus:
It's about time I change the state I'm in
And trade the garden for sunshine
I count the tracks to look forward, to look back
As I cross each city line
One farther and one closer to mine

I don't know if I am ready
Don't know if I'll recognize when I am
I don't know the first thing about love, but I'm bound to learn
At least I know just where I stand

The sun looks new on this kitchen table
These walls boast the warmth of stone
A poem from my mother and an old Zippo lighter of my old man's
Are a start to make it feel like home

Bridge:
I traded backwoods solace for the sand underneath my feet
And what I gave I gained in promise of a whole new life for me
