Don't Take Her Away
Don’t Take Her Away

Dad said family meeting at five
Mom smiled but it didn’t touch her eyes
I knew something wasn’t right
Dad said words but I didn’t hear
Anything besides
Mom’s been sick for a little while
The ground opened up
My stomach fell right through
And I followed suit
I’m looking up from down there
Grasping at the thin air
Praying, praying
Please, not today, don’t take her away x 2
Wake up before the morning light
Tears still streaming from my eyes
Not sure it was just a bad dream anymore
Sneak upstairs sit by her bed
Listen to her steady breaths
So that I could breathe again
She’d stroke my hair when I cried
Told God please take all of mine
Just give her back her happy curls again and
Please, not today, don’t take her away x 2
I’m not meaning to be selfish
Lord I’m really not
But nobody can live without sunlight
And I can’t live without her
Two angry scars, one broken heart
Too tired to get up in the dark
On the bad days
But she made the good days
Outweigh all the bad days
And she’s still my silver lining
I know nothing lasts forever
But she keeps us together
So I pray
Please, not today, don’t take her away x 2
