My former Flap Jaw bandmate Richard Riesser wore out a lot of shoes beatin' those Nashville streets, pitchin' his songs in the late 70's and on in to the 80's.
After more than a decade he figured his life's time would be better spent and more joyous, fishin' those streams and hunting the fields of Montana.
My wife and I stayed a couple of nights with Richard and his wife at their cozy home in Bozeman in the fall of 2018.
A good part of two afternoons was spent with Richard in his basement studio while with guitar in hand, he played and sang as many of his recently penned songs as we could pack in to those few hours. I had my ZOOM hand-held recorder rolling the entire time.
After returning to California I downloaded what I had captured... only 62 of his most recently written songs!
Bright Side of The Blues comes from deep in his catalog (late 80's or early 90's I believe). It has rolled 'round in my head all these years... I love the lyric (Think Workin' Man's Blues by Merle Haggard) and just had to include the song in this project.
David and I salvaged some of the tracks from Richard's demo, keeping Jason Carter's fiddle and Richard's rhythm guitar. I laid in all the vocals and the bass, Tom Lackner replaced the drums while David added new guitar and mandolin tracks.
Thanks Richard for the song, and for introducing me to "the bright side" of the blues.
