North Dakota
North Dakota
You followed me four thousand miles from all we'd ever known.
Closed your eyes and stepped into a dream that’s not your own.
Awoke to unforgiving cold the ground as hard as steel.
And hunger only overcome by faith and stubborn will.
We rushed to build a soddy before the storms arrived.
It nearly drove us crazy nearly buried us alive.
But time sure passes slowly in a musty earthen mound.
Riding out the winter twenty miles from any town
Though life in North Dakota ain't a perfect paradise, I never heard you once complain I never heard you cry.
Believe it's getting better yet at times I'm still afraid.
Less than you deserve but you stay with me anyway.
You read that faded letter it's pages wearing thin and clinging to the voices you'll never hear again.
By candlelight you close your eyes and taste the salty air.
Papa mends the nets again while momma braids your hair.
Though life in North Dakota ain't a perfect paradise, I never heard you once complain I never heard you cry.
Believe it's getting better yet at times I'm still afraid.
Less than you deserve but you stay with me anyway.
I hope to build a home for you when all the crops are in, bare another winter sow the barley fields again.
