Alex MacLeod grew up listening to some great bluegrass, thanks to his Dad and picker, Sandy MacLeod. The Bluegrass Cardinals and Jim & Jesse McReynolds were significant influences in the sounds that formed young Alex’s impression of what bluegrass was.

Appreciating the simple, yet beautiful lyrics that made up a lot of Jim and Jesses’ canon of material, along with the vocal arrangements that made the “Cardinal Sound” so loved, Alex set out to write a song that captured both of those influences.

Pretty Little Bird features some wonderful mandolin cross-picking by Billy Thibodeau, made popular by the likes of Jesse McReynolds. The simplistic, touching imagery set forth in the song is also complimented by the vocal arrangements, with a call-and-response, harkening to the sound made famous by the Bluegrass Cardinals.
