The way we get news nowadays is a lot different than it used to be! Walter Cronkite anchored the CBS evening news from 1962 to 1981. He was famous for his real time reporting of JFK's assasination in 1963. My drawing on the CD jacket shows him as he appeared on camera that day at his desk in his shirt sleeves, taking his glasses on and off as he reports breaking news. After a reporting trip to report on the war in 1968, he closed his evening broadcast with an editorial comment that " it seems now more certain than ever that the bloody experience of Vietnam is to end in stalemate." Some claim that on hearing that comment, JBJ said, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost America", and Johnson soon announced he would not seek reelection. (My parents watched NBC's Huntley and Brinkley.) The FCC's "fairness doctrine" was abandoned in the Reagon era, which opened the door for folks like Rush Limbaugh to cater to particular political factions. Of course talk radio was just the beginning of the fracturing of the news. For a perspective on all this, you might read "When the News Broke", Heather Hendershot's book on the beginnings of "fake news". She pinpoints the start of distrust in the news outlets to the coverage of the 1968 Democratic convention. It's fascinating and terrifying.
