John Hurt's House
John Hurt’s House
I woke up this morning
Heard it on the news
200 hundred year old cabin
Of the man with the Avalon Blues
They called an electrician.
They don’t suspect foul play
I guess ashes go to ashes
And dust to Delta clay
He was not like Son and Johnson
Had something no one had
Not lightning in a bottle
But coffee in a can
Fires in Mississippi seem
A little harder to put out
You can't travel through the delta
And not stop at John Hurt’s house
A gentleman dirt farmer
Who loved to play a song
And just for half a minute
Got the world to sing a song
And when the roaring sixties
Got heavy for a while
He showed up with a pork pie hat
A six string and a smile
He was not like Son and Johnson
Had something no one had
Not lightning in a bottle
But coffee in a can
Fires in Mississippi seem
A little harder to put out
You can’t travel through the delta now
And stop at John Hurt’s house
