New River Gorge
West Virginia sunrise
Peaceful and serene
As fine a mountain morning
As anyone had seen
The river far below
Above the clear blue sky
Come noon that mournful day
Two lovers were to die

She was so young and pretty
A mother to a child
No one saw the suffering
She must have held inside
He was a fine successful man
Held in high esteem
Two lives lived to the fullest
At least that’s how it seemed

No one knows the answer
Why the plan was forged
But they jumped to their sad ending
At the New River Gorge

They took their secret with them
Down to the river bed
Folks were asking questions
But the sheriff shook his head
Rumors started flying
And they’re flying still
Truth and fiction mingle
As they always will

Chorus

Green River, keeps on rolling
Hums its solemn tune
The flowers on its banks
So beautiful in bloom
You can try and find a reason
Pick who you want to blame
But going cross that river
Won’t ever be the same

Chorus
