Me and Tom T. Hall
Me And Tom T. Hall
Jerry Salley
Vs1)
When I was just a kid I’d take my Daddy’s record player
Then I’d put my favorite vinyl on
From “That’s How I Got To Memphis” to “Second Handed Flowers”
I’d practice till I memorized each song
Locked myself inside my bedroom walls
I sure thought we sounded good together there
Just me and Tom T Hall

Vs2)
Well, I was singing Me & Jesus when I got up on the big stage
Ten years old, strumming my guitar
They said I had an old soul for a kid of such a young age
And the songs I sang would really take me far
I always thanked them for their kind applause
They couldn’t see him up there but I knew it was
For me and Tom T Hall

CH)
He had a gift for making me believe each line was true
The poet of the common man, a modern day Shakepseare through and through
No doubt he is the Greatest storyteller of them all
There was a strong connection there between us
Me and Tom T. Hall

Vs3)
The year I turned sixteen I bought the Faster Horses Album
And ran a needle through it like a knife
I couldn’t get enough of one that he called The Songwriter
There’s no doubt that record changed my life
I was listening to it when I heard/felt the call
And I thought every song he sang was written just for
Me and Tom T Hall

Vs4)
When I graduated college I headed straight for Nashville
And it wasn’t long until I met the man
He took a liking to me and soon I was at Fox Hollow
Hanging out each time I got the chance
Miss Dixie served us lunch and Tom would talk
Sometimes I would sit and listen hours there just
Me and Tom T Hall

CH2)
He had a gift for making me believe each line was true
The poet of the common man, a modern day Shakepseare through and through
No doubt he is the Greatest storyteller of them all
Two men with ties to Olive Hill, Kentucky
Me and Tom T. Hall

Vs5)
I never will forget the last time I went to see him. We sat and drank black coffee for awhile Walked out to the hill where he had spread Miss Dixie’s ashes He said I sure miss the way she made me smile I soaked up every golden mem’ry he recalled And before I left we got some pictures there of me and Tom T Hall

Vs6)
Well, I remember very well the spot where I was standing
When I got the call with tragic news
I was in East Tennessee to do a little writing
Out searching for a song like he would do.
I had planned to go and see him in the fall
But he had other plans and left these memories of me and Tom T Hall

CH3)
He had a gift for making me believe each line was true
The poet of the common man, a modern day Shakepseare through and through
No doubt he is the Greatest storyteller of them all
I’m so grateful for the time we had together
Me and Tom T. Hall
