Old Songwriters Like Me
Old Songwriters Like Me
Jerry Salley
Vs1)
They call me a hillbilly has been
A Music Row dinosaur
They tell me the kind of songs that I write
Ain’t the kind they want to hear anymore.
Yeah, They say my heyday is over
Now that the music has changed
And, the new folks/people in charge, could care less who you are
Might as well put your guitar away……….Soooo……

CH)
What do you do with old songwriters like me
Ones who aren’t ready to let their paper and pen gather dust on the shelf
What do you do with old songwriters like me,
Old Songwriters, Who still have a story to tell

Vs2)
I was the first number he dialed up
When he moved into town
I wrote songs with him, and I thought we were friends
And gladly introduced him around
But, once he had his first song recorded
I never heard from him like before
It ain’t hard to forget Old Songwriters I guess
When they can’t help you out anymore

Chorus

BR)
They’ve never heard Hank Cochran or Harlan
Couldn’t sing one word of ‘ol Tom T Hall
But if you asked them about country music
They smile and say they started it all

Vs3)
Just when my phone had gone silent
I got a call right out of the blue
From a young man up in Kentucky
Who said “Man, I sure love what you do”
So, we started writing together
And, next thing that boy’s a big country star
Now they all ring my phone, but hey, nobody’s home
Cause guess whose name they see back up on top of the charts?

Chorus

TAG)
Don’t be so quick to judge ‘cause if you’re lucky enough
Some day you just might be one yourself
An Old songwriter who still has a story to tell
