A Mind With A Heart Of Its Own

The Slocans are big fans of Tom Petty. When you’re driving 4-5 hours every day for a month in a tour van, you listen to a lot of music to pass the time. We listened to so much bluegrass we decided that one day a week we would listen to a different genre. We called it “no bluegrass Thursdays.” We ended up listening to Tom Petty so much we should have named it “Tom Petty Thursdays.” Needless to say, we became very familiar with his music, particularly the ‘Full Moon Fever’ album. We’re always looking for great songs we could make our own and ‘A Mind With A Heart Of Its Own’ fit the mold perfectly. The Lyrics are reminiscent of an uninterrupted stream of consciousness mirroring how Petty describes his songwriting process. We had a lot of fun with this one by adding slide banjo, Mandola, a 2nd guitar and group vocals.
