Biography
A 70-year-old songwriter with a drum machine, a tape recorder, and limited musical ability can be a dangerous thing.
“I’ve been at this stuff now going on 60 years. I’ve made money at it so that makes me a professional songwriter. A poor professional songwriter.”
The Living Room Floor Band is the musical alter-ego of Raleigh Squires, the aforementioned “poor professional songwriter." 40+ years in the songwriting business has seen his songs recorded by an illustrious lineup of artists including Vern Gosdin, Mel Tillis, Alison Krauss, Don Williams, Willie Nelson, The Oak Ridge Boys, and George Strait. However, most songs never made it off the page. Instead of waiting for others to record from his back catalogue, Raleigh decided there’s no time like the present and went into his home studio by himself to record most of his debut album, Flaws & all. The 10-song project also includes two studio masters he co-produced with longtime friend and frequent co-writer Buddy Cannon and a third master, a Halloween single, Vampire’s Lament, featuring Count Ridicula, recorded in the home studio of Lyle Lovett producer Billy Williams.
The first single, Darwin, has a YouTube video that has received more than 30,000 views in just the first month.
Seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1962 is what kickstarted his interest in making music and after watching them go through the writing and recording process in the recent “Let It Be” documentary, he decided he owed it to his songs to expose them to “whoever would listen.”
“They’re not perfect,” Raleigh says. “I’m not a great musician compared to most of my peers here in Nashville, but it was gratifying to make them all come together by myself. It’s the process songwriters go through before they’re ever presented to anybody.”
