A “bonus track” -- Dashawn Hickman, Emmanuel Rankin, and I all grew up in a similar Pentecostal/full-gospel church tradition. We had a break in the studio, and Dashawn and Emmanuel started messing around with the song. Where the main recording takes the solemn and wistful tone of a service’s opening, they were going at the full-throated and open-throttled energy of “once the Spirit gets to moving.” I saw where they were going with it, and the rest of us jumped in as I told Benjy to go hit record. We only caught part of the song, but we caught the most magical moments of that session. On the record, it fades in, hits a glorious crescendo, then fades back out–as if someone is passing by a church, is held enthralled for a moment and tempted to enter the light at the door, then keeps walking on into the night.
