EH QUOTES:

“What a wonderful connection to all our humanity!”
-The New York Times

"They recreate the music you would have heard if you could time travel to a country dance in Mississippi around 1903."
-Mick Gold, BBC/UK

"Joyous, athletic, ancient, modern, and eternal, the Ebony Hillbillies don’t just tell an important story about our country and keep an essential part of our musical heritage alive, but they entertain, magically, majestically, gracefully, and energetically. A pile of passionate, high-end musicians who apply their skill to filling this old tradition with beautiful new life, it’s likely you won’t see a more engaging, entertaining, and purely joyful band all year."
-Tim Sommer, SHO

THE EBONY HILLBILLIES - TRIMMIN’ DA FAT - Vol. 2
Release Date - 2020

THE EBONY HILLBILLIES
From the street corners of Manhattan to the hallowed stages of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to TV appearances on the BBC and ABC’s “Good Morning America,” The Ebony Hillbillies are a true phenomenon, reviving the lost art form and American legacy of string band music for a whole new generation.

Continuing to bring a fresh urgency to the genre for a 21st Century world in need of some deep musical education, the dynamic ensemble – led by Henrique Prince (fiddle, vocals) with Norris Bennett (banjo, mountain dulcimer, guitar, vocals), Gloria Thomas Gassaway (on vocals and bones), acoustic bassist William “Salty Bill” Salter (3x-Grammy winning co-writer of legendary pop hits like “Where is the Love” and “Just The Two of Us”) and A.R.(Ali Rahman) on washboard “cowboy” percussion kit.

The Ebony Hillbillies started out on the streets of Manhattan, but their vibe and influence has extended over the years to acclaimed live performances at legendary venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; appearances on the BBC, Good Morning America, NBC, CBS, etc., international music workshops and festivals, visual artist collaborations at museums (including The Whitney with phenom Kara Walker and The Smithsonian Museum), Foot stomping and Hand-clapping Dance parties and more. In the digital era, they have sold thousands of hard copies of their CDs – Sabrina’s Holiday, I Thought You Knew, Barefoot & Flying and Slappin’ A Rabbit – Live! – at their shows and via their globally popular website, www.theEbonyHillbillies.com

Our first entry - taken from the ‘Slappin’ A Rabbit’ live concert sessions - is an EH fave! Gloria Thomas Gassaway gets everyone up out of their seat every time with this old time uptempo frolic filled with whoops and holler call and responses by Salty Bill, Gloria, and the gang - its a whole lotta fun!

An old time uptempo burner with twists and turns…also from the Slappin’ A Rabbit live concert sessions. Salty Bill pumping up the crowd only the way he can.

03. GEORGE BOOKER 2:40
Songwriter/Author: Traditional - Arr. by THE EH
Publishing: THE EBONY HILLBILLIES MUSIC INC

Taken from the Slappin’ A Rabbit sessions - its an old time calypso -esque ditty featuring the introduction of the band by Rique.

A nursery rhyme - lullabye - children’s tunes - etc…an old time shout featured on the Barefoot and Flying sessions.

05. OLD CARPENTER’S WALTZ 3:19
Songwriter/Author: CANRAY FONTENOT - Arr. by THE EH
Publishing: THE EBONY HILLBILLIES MUSIC INC

Recorded on the road. A tune by the legendary Canray Fontenot. This tribute features Rique on violin. One of the great many waltzes the EH cover and probably one of the prettiest melodies.

06. LEATHER BRITCHES 2:02
Songwriter/Author: Traditional - Arr. by THE EH

Taken from the Barefoot and Flying sessions - one of the oldest old time tunes…

07. BIG FAT DADDY 3:53

An Irene Reid classic. Given the old time EH treatment featuring Gloria Thomas Gassaway. A complete joy!

This is an old time booty moving grinder made to unearth a funky chicken dance…Recorded on the road as well.

09. 5 MILES FROM TOWN 2:49
Songwriter/Author: Traditional - Arr. by THE EH
PUBLISHER: THE EBONY HILLBILLIES MUSIC INC

An EH fave. Recorded by the great Murph Gribble and realized today by the EH - recorded on the road. An old time pop tune that still moves today. Love it.

10. I GOT A LITTLE HOME TO GO TO 2:38
Songwriter/Author: Traditional - Arr. by THE EH
Publishing: THE EBONY HILLBILLIES MUSIC INC

Taken from the Barefoot and Flying sessions - featuring Rique Prince on vocals and violin with the dancing washboard rhythms of Mr. Newman Taylor Baker.

11. PATEROLLER WILL GETCHA 2:09
Songwriter/Author: Traditional - Arr. by THE EH
Publishing: THE EBONY HILLBILLIES MUSIC INC

This track was recorded in Upstate NY at an annual Seeger event. It was one of the times I felt that old time string band music was the impetus of everything that came after it in this country and abroad. We could hear James Brown we could hear the hypnotic melodic and rhythmic African and Native influences. Just incredible…how this music just breathes effortlessly through time.

12. ASHOKAN FAREWELL 4:09
Songwriter/Author: JAY UNGAR
Publishing: SWINGING DOOR MUSIC (BMI)

A modern day old tune penned by Jay Ungar. Produced by Richard Alderson…and played beautifully by Mr Norris W Bennett on Banjo and Mr Rique Prince on violin.

13. THE OUTRO…LOOKING FORWARD AND BACK :30
Songwriter/Author: THE EBONY HILLBILLIES
Publishing: THE EBONY HILLBILLIES MUSIC INC

This was used to tie up the record. We didn’t want to end the record with Jay Ungar’s tune again. i.e. Barefoot And Flying…so this was put together from the Slappin’ A Rabbit Sessions….Reminding us of our journey to never forget what moves us forward.
